Hiking in the Catalina Mountains, particularly Sabino Canyon, is a wonderous experience.
To speak specifically about Sabino Canyon, trails for every level of ability are available, starting with a blacktop road at the parking lot and gift shop, leading 3.7 miles deep into the canyon (motor vehicles are not permitted). Tram trip ride can bring you to the end; you may then walk part way or all the way back down to the parking lot.
"Off road" trails are interlaced throughout the canyon, ranging from a short mile or two with little elevation gain, to trails that gain 1500 feet of altitude (for example, Blackett's Ridge, one of the very best!).
Breathtaking mountain views, canyon views, and city views abound. Plenty of wildlife exists, from four footed fur types to feathery flyers. Be sure to bring a camera!
Miles and miles of additional trails cover the Catalina Mountans, including Catalina State Park in Oro Valley, as well as the top of Mt. Lemmon at 9,300 feet (a paved road will take you to the top for many more miles of hiking, and a cup of coffee in the small village of SummerHaven).
Sabino Canyon and other excellent hiking trails are found at the edge of Tucson proper, and are easily reached by car or bicycle in mere minutes.
I have hiked several thousand miles in the canyon, each memorable hike bringing a variety of different and wonderful experiences.
An additional six or seven different mountain ranges are also open for hiking, all within 30 miles or so from Tucson.
Excellent topography and trail maps are available. Just call me. I'll send them to you, at no charge of course.
